·

LONDON: People who spend time walking or even just standing instead of sitting down may be at lower risk of diabetes, a UK study suggests.

Previous research has linked sedentary time to type 2 diabetes, which is tied to aging and obesity and happens when the body can't properly use insulin to convert blood sugar into energy.

For the current study, researchers asked 435 adults at risk for developing diabetes to wear activity monitors around the clock for one week to see how much time they spent sitting, standing and walking. Then they examined lab tests to see how well their bodies processed sugar and insulin.

Findings from this study "provide further encouraging evidence" that simply substituting standing for sitting throughout the day may improve markers of type 2 diabetes, said study co-author Dr. Joseph Henson, a diabetes researcher at the University of Leicester.

"However, stronger associations were observed for stepping, thus highlighting the continued importance of more intense physical activity," Henson said by email.

Study participants were 67 years old on average. Most of them had excess fat around the midsection and were either overweight or obese, and about one third had a family history of diabetes.

Each day, participants spent an average of 9.4 hours sitting or lying down during their waking hours. This included a total of about 4.2 hours of brief periods of sitting for no more than a half hour, as well as 5.4 hours of prolonged bouts of sitting that lasted at least 30 minutes.

In addition, participants typically spent an average of 4.5 hours a day standing and 1.7 hours a day walking.

People who replaced 30 minutes of prolonged sitting time with shorter bouts of sitting had a 4 percent reduction in fasting insulin levels, researchers calculated.

If participants replaced prolonged sitting with standing, however, they had 5 percent drop in fasting insulin levels, and walking instead was associated with an 11 percent difference, researchers report in BMJ Open.

The study didn't find an association between blood sugar or insulin levels when people swapped short periods of sitting for standing, however. Stepping instead of sitting for short periods was linked to a 7 percent drop in fasting insulin.

The study wasn't a controlled experiment and can't prove how different activity levels directly influence the risk of diabetes, the authors note. Researchers also used statistical models to estimate how much changes in activity might impact blood sugar and insulin.

Still, the results add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that even small reductions in sedentary time may help lower the risk of diabetes, said Bethany Barone Gibbs, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh who wasn't involved in the study.

"Breaking up prolonged sitting with walking or standing can improve how our body takes up blood glucose," Barone Gibbs said by email.

When the body moves, it signals muscles and cells that will need fuel and they start absorbing sugar from the blood. When people are sedentary, these signals don't go out.

"This is why blood sugar seems to go higher if we engage in prolonged sitting versus more active behaviors after eating," Barone Gibbs added. "If we are constantly exposed to high blood sugar over time, this can cause diabetes and cardiovascular diseases to develop."

Even though the results mirror other studies linking reduced sedentary time to a lower diabetes risk, the use of statistical models rather than a controlled experiment makes it hard to see what would happen if people cut back on sitting in real life, said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"The people didn't actually replace their sitting with physical activity, which is what would happen in an intervention," Katzmarzyk, who wasn't involved in the study, added by email. "We need more actual interventions for us to better understand what is going on."

But paper money are always silent.

So, when your value increase, keep yourself silent and humble.

█▓▒░(°TaNoLi°)░▒▓█ How to Focus on Studying -- Tips for Students (Must Read)

-----

 How to Focus on Studying!

Tips for Students

Part One: The Do's

1. Find a suitable studying environment. Your bedroom or classroom isn't always the best possible place. Find a nice, quiet place with a large, comfortable chair, like your sitting room, preferably without a television, a computer or a cell phone within your reach.

  • The library is usually a nice place to study because it's quiet. Perhaps your parents' office is another potential location, provided it's quiet and offers few distractions.

2. Collect revision materials before you begin studying. Do not plan to look for pens, highlighters, rulers, etc. in the middle of studying. It can be really distracting at times, so prepare everything you think you need.

3. Find a study partner. Pick someone who is sensible and focused like you are on the same task. Don't always pick your best friend, as you may ruin both your concentrations by chitchatting. Having a study partner is a great idea, as you can bounce ideas off each other, and see things form a different perspective as yourself.

  • Some people find study partners distracting. Chances are if you are an extrovert, meaning you really like other people and love talking, a study partner probably won't be the best option for you. If you are an introvert, meaning you generally keep to yourself and are a bit shier, a study partner might work great for you. Just make sure that your study partner isn't too extroverted, or else they'll be gabbing away while you're trying to learn.
  • Choose someone who is smarter than you. It sounds basic to say, but a lot of people overlook this. If you want to learn, choose a study partner who is smart, dedicated, and doesn't mind teaching. Your study sessions will be a whole lot better.

4. Collect suitable revision snacks. No energy drinks or coffee, because sooner or later, you will crash out. Granola bars, fruit, and water are good, because they are simple and effective at releasing carbohydrates.

5. Take short breaks. After 45 minutes of studying, take a 10 minute break and do something different. Try to get back to your studying after the break; the break shouldn't be longer than 20 minutes.

  • Plan your breaks out with alarms. If your breaks are planned, you're less likely to miss them in the first place, and more importantly, less likely to "accidentally" take more time than is needed.

  • Why take breaks? Your brain needs time to recharge after it processes a bunch of information. In some studies, taking a break and walking around improved memory recall and simple test scores in subjects.

6. Get Motivated. If you do your revision well and prepare for the exam, you will do fine. Get to a point with your revision so you can enjoy the exam when it happens. Do not think that the exam is a big deal, think of it as something to challenge your learning.

  • Set a goal for yourself, even if it's a bit unrealistic. Push yourself to do better than what you think you can do, and who knows, maybe you'll surprise yourself.
  • Motivate yourself with a reward. This takes a bit of self-control, so ask someone in a position of authority to help you out if you need help.
  • Tell yourself why studying is important. Remind yourself of why you're working hard and tell yourself it's worth it.

7. Sit down and study. You have everything you need in front of you and there's nothing left to procrastinate with. It's just you and the material. Well? What are you waiting for?
  • Use flash cards and notes to your advantage. Flash cards are helpful for some people, as they contain important information in very little space. Use them if you feel they are helpful for you. Lay them out sequentially, or order them according to a different scheme if you want to give them a little more meaning.
  • Make sure you know the most important information first, and then move onto the rest. Study and understand key concepts before you branch out. This will give you a basic level of understanding to build on.

Part Two: The Don'ts

1. Don't Panic! When you panic, you make mistakes, so keep calm throughout. If you successfully planned your revision, you will have no need to panic when the exam comes. Take a deep breath, tell yourself "I can do this," and cool down.

2. Minimize computer use. Especially the internet. You learn better when you write things out yourself. Also refrain from using your cell phone as you will be replying to texts every minute, which is very distracting.

  • Turn your internet off if you know you'll be tempted. Turn your computer off or ask your friend to hold onto it. Basically, try to ensure that you're not whiling away your time on the internet when you're supposed to be studying.

3. Don't listen to music unless it helps you study. Some people need music in order to help them study, but try not to give your brain anything else to focus on while you're studying. One more distraction, even if it's calming music, is another thing your brain has to process in addition to the information you're trying to learn.

4.
Don't stray off-topic. We all catch ourselves going off-topic from time to time. Sometimes it's because the information we're supposed to learn is boring; sometimes it's because the information we don't need to know is exciting. Whatever it is, wait until after you've studied to really dig deeper and explore different subjects.

  • Always ask yourself: How likely is it that this information will show up on my test? Is you're really focused, you can rank the information from the most likely to the least likely, giving the most likely material the majority of your time and the least likely the rest of it.

5. Don't get discouraged. Studying for a test can be daunting, especially in the beginning. Take things in manageable chunks and don't worry about getting things perfect the first time around. Remember, you're here to learn, not necessarily ace a test. Try to understand the "big picture" if you're having trouble understanding the concept. This should make the details easier to understand.

Hope the above tips will help you in your Exams and Studying. Share it with all students, friends, colleagues, and your family members.

Parents are also requested to share with their Kids.

We wish you all the success today and always! May there be success at every turn of life and all your dreams come true!

Keep writing and sharing your thoughts.

Thank You!.

█▓▒░(°TaNoLi°)░▒▓█ Fwd: {Awareness} How to Reduce Business Costs

By Junaid Tahir:

Business costs are sub-classified into two categories; Fixed Costs and Variable Costs.
Fixed costs are defined as the expenses which do not change as a function of business such as salaries of employees, rents of the office, facilities and equipment costs. However, please don't get confused that Fixed Costs cannot be changed. Indeed they can be changed but their prime definition remains the same that these costs are stable for longer duration of time and do not usually get impacted due to on-going business volume. On the contrary, the Variable Costs are the ones which keep changing due to multiple factors.
Below is the list of several domains and recommendations (minor tweak for SMEs and major ones for large scale companies) in the form of questions in order to give you a personalized experience and to invoke the thought process for the business cost reduction:

1-  Marketing, Advertising and Business Development:
i-             How much budget was utilized for marketing  in last 6 months? How much the marketing has been effective? Is there any need to re-evaluate the marketing strategy?
ii-            How much investment is done on customer's entertainment?
iii-          Do you do a monthly expense analysis audit? Do you know specific techniques to optimize your marketing budget such as AdSense, affiliate marketing etc?
iv-           Do you consider B2B marketing, email marketing, banner advertisement, pay per click, video marketing or SEO optimization?

2-  Leasing and Rental Management:
i-             Does the company's office and warehouse at different locations? Why not having both at same location to reduce renting and transportation costs?
ii-            Any recent audit done to determine if the current rented space for office or warehouse is worth its expenses? Is the size and cost in sync with the requirements of business? Can this be moved to a less costly area?
iii-          Is there any tools, machinery or other resources which can be leased to earn some extra cash? Any marketing plans to do this?

3-  Staff Management and Optimization
i-             Are there any underutilized employees? Can some extra tasks given to these employees to make them more productive or 'earning' resources?
ii-            Can some of the permanent staff be converted to contract based? This will save extra benefit and reduce your long term liabilities.
iii-          Can some of the tasks/ resources be outsourced? (HR services, Visa, documentation, maintenance etc.)
iv-           Did any re-evaluation of resource responsibilities happened in last one years? Are there any employees with duplicate roles?
v-            Company sponsored mobile phone packages are fairly used? The packages are carefully selected based on the role of each employee? Any audit happened for the utilization of mobile and other resources given to employees?
vi-           Are the employees trained enough to perform their duties so that they make less errors and mistakes?
vii-         Right policies are in place so as to reduce the reworks? What is the accountability mechanism?
viii-        Mature and error free databases are in place for efficient and accurate reports generation and to avoid errors in data entry?
ix-          Is there any scheme available through which employees are given suggestions for the improvement of organizations and get rewarded if their suggestions are implemented?
x-           Any specialised use of tracking employee online activities such as Manic Time?
xi-          Employee lay off should be last thing to do as it impacts your organization in many ways such as loss of sincerity, productivity and efficiency of the rest of the employees.

4-  Vehicle Utilization and Fuel Management:
i)             How vehicles are utilized in a day to day work? How much company is flexible for the utilization for personal use?
ii)            How vehicles are maintained?  Is this task given to any agency to avoid corruption and in order to enjoy free benefits  such as car replacements ,free wash, oil, and tuning services?
iii)          How vehicles are tracked for the daily utilization (how many kilo meters travelled, how could multiple visits or same kind of visits be reduced?
iv)           Pick and drop of employee is happening on bulk basis or at individual level?
v)            Restriction of some of the travel (local and abroad) possible?

5-  Energy Conservation
i)             Motion detection Sensors installed for turning lights off during off hours?
ii)            Sleep mode enabled on laptop computers?
iii)          Older bulbs/fans/computers are still being utilized which are poor when it comes to energy efficient devices selection?

6-  Hard Resources Utilization and Audit
i-             How many printers Scanners are in place? Can we reduce some of them?
ii-            How many pages are printed per day? Any mechanism to control it?
iii-          Is there any over utilization of pantry products? Employees are encouraged to use non-recyclable things?
iv-           Which of the policies and processes can be converted to paperless by avoiding photocopying/ printing/ reproducing ? Can you run a paperless company altogether?
v-            Is there any strong mechanism of inventory management? Any products lost because of poor control on hardware resources ?

With these recommendations, I believe any company can optimize their business costs consequently improve their profit margins.
How to you optimize the costs in your organization?

█▓▒░(°TaNoLi°)░▒▓█ Food Stories: Bombay Bakery's Coffee Cake

http://images.dawn.com/news/1176883/food-stories-bombay-bakerys-coffee-cake

Food Stories: Bombay Bakery's Coffee Cake

Nostalgia is a beautiful thing — it comes with editing, and our brain selectively remembers only the very wonderful. One memory I cherish is the legendary coffee cake from the famed Bombay Bakery in Hyderabad.

Abu was a marketing executive at a German multinational, the times were the glorious '70s and '80s, and every trip to the Hyderabad depot (a few times a month) meant the coming home of the coffee cake, followed by Ami's exclamation, 'Let them eat cake,' in imitation of the famous words by Marie Antoinette.

Discovering the history of Bombay Bakery

The Bombay Bakery is over 100 years old and was the brainchild of Pahlaj Rai and his Swiss wife who famously sold bakery delights out of her home. The bakery was named after the city by the sea, Bombay. Pahlaj Rai is believed to have enjoyed the aura of the wonderfully cosmopolitan city and decided to name his bakery after it.

Or is there a deeper connection?

Also read: Bombay Bakery —100 years and going strong

My research led me in many directions, but I did connect the dots somewhat, throwing in my experience of cake tasting and knowledge of the history and similarities of cake making in cities like Bombay, Karachi and Hyderabad, all cities belonging to the wonderful province of Sindh.

The book Darjeeling: The Colourful History and Precarious Fate of the World's Greatest Tea by Jeff Koehler says the following:

"In gardens of hill stations during the summer social season, and in the sunny winter down on the plains, tea was served along with sweets – tiffin cake, dholi buns, Bombay golden cake and Gymkhana cake."

Reading the same led me to research on Bombay golden cakes, which led me to the fact that the Parsis of Bombay have been baking cakes for the longest time, as have the Parsis of Karachi. Armeen's and Mrs. Mistrey's cakes were the rage of the '80s and '90s in Karachi, not to mention the Persian Bakery in Saddar, Karachi.

This led me to research Persian and Parsi cookbooks. I came across the name of an exotic one named Vividh Vani, published in the year 1903, before the opening of the Bombay Bakery. Dan Sheffield, a lecturer at the Dept. of Near Eastern Studies at the Princeton University, U.S, says about the book:

"By this time the Bombay Parsi cuisine had already been Anglicized. The book, which is around 1500 pages, has recipes for 57 varieties of cakes, ranging from coffee cake and cherry cakes to things with exotic names like cake Napoleon, Chantilly cake and Bakar Khani, etc."

Vividh Vani narrates other interesting stories leading me to my next conjecture. It says the following:

"The second spate of Irani Zoroastrians that fled from the Islamic Qajar regime were mainly bakers, sweet makers and café owners."

So perhaps it was the delicious baking of Parsi experts in early 20th century Bombay that inspired Pahlaj Rai to name his bakery Bombay Bakery, and maybe the coffee cake is inspired from Bombay baking and is a twist on the coffee cake recipe from Vividh Vani.

When it was time for me to try my luck at baking, I stumbled upon a recipe online. Needless to say it was a slice of heaven from the past. However, the sugar I used for icing was turbinado sugar. It tastes just like white sugar but is brown in colour. So the colour of my icing was a tad darker but the taste was just the same. This heavenly slice of cake took me to the sweetest time of my life, its aroma, taste, texture, presentation was as I remember, and here it is, from my kitchen to yours.
