The country's supreme court has called for an inquiry into how Mr Zardari came to purchase the 365-acre home counties estate worth £4 million.

It follows a ruling on Wednesday which overturned a legal amnesty granted to senior politicians and officials in 2007.

Mr Zardari purchased the mock Tudor Rockwood Park in the 1990s and it was soon labelled the "Surrey Mahal" by opposition politicians.

The 20-room house with two working farms became a notorious symbol of Mr Zardari's alleged abuses during his late wife Benazir Bhutto's two terms as prime minister in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Mr Zardari is alleged to have spent more than £300,000 on renovations, including building his own private polo field and an exact copy of the local village pub.

Now Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered government officials to ask the Swiss government to reopen an investigation into whether the property was bought with laundered money.

It will form part of a wider inquiry into whether he received millions of pounds in kickbacks from two Swiss companies.

The ruling on Wednesday struck out the National Reconciliation Ordinance amnesty, which allowed the late Benazir Bhutto, Mr Zardari and other high profile aides and officials to return to Pakistan in 2007 without fear of prosecution.

Thousands of corruption cases against politicians and officials could now be reactivated, including six cases which now threaten to topple Mr Zardari's presidency.

He is accused of taking £37 million in kickbacks from government contracts as part of a billion pound fortune which Mr Zardari is being asked to explain.

Last night the opposition Pakistan Muslim Leaque (N) called for him to resign as president.

Spokesman Khawaja Asif: "He should quit this office in his own interest as well as in the interest of his party and the system,"

Documents presented before Pakistan's supreme court this week, linked Mr Zardari and his associates to 11 bank accounts in Switzerland containing £36 million.

The allegations centre on a contract awarded in 1994, during Benazir Bhutto's second term as prime minister, to two Swiss companies to inspect Pakistan's imports and exports.

In return for handing the Swiss companies the business, £7 million is alleged to have been paid to Mr Zardari and his associates.

Mr Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party has called a meeting to discuss the ruling on Saturday but the president's spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, insisted he would not resign.

"The PPP has faced many challenges in the past and it will continue to face them in the future," said Mr Babar. "We are not deterred."

Mr Zardari previously spent 11 years in jail in Pakistan without any of the accusations being proven and claims charges against him as politically motivated.
